Padres @ Phillies: Game Day Preview
We mentioned that the starting pitchers would be the focus in today’s contest and the numbers back it up.
LHP Cliff Lee (9-6 2.83 ERA) will toe the rubber for the Phillies as he looks to get his first win in July. After allowing just one earned run in June, Lee has given up nine runs in three July starts. Six of those runs came on July 3, 2011, when the Toronto Blue Jays pounded three home runs in a 7-4 victory.
San Diego counters with RHP Aaron Harang (8-2 3.29 ERA) who is the ace of the Padres pitching staff. Since May 19, 2011, Harang has allowed two earned runs or less in seven of his eight starts. In his last outing Harang gave up three runs as the Padres broke out the bats and pounded the Florida Marlins 14-3 backed by 20 hits.

In his last two starts, Lee has been solid as he has allowed just three earned runs in 14 innings pitched, but both games resulted in a no-decision. Lee loves pitching at home as he is sporting a razor sharp 1.61 ERA in eleven starts at Citizens Bank Park.
We aren’t entirely sold on Harang. Make no mistake, this guy can bring it, but owns a 4.01 ERA on the road and has pitched against some fairly light hitting teams in five of his last six starts.
Philadelphia hasn’t been lights out at the dish but they have covered eight of their last ten games and five straight. Four of those five were “barely covered” games – but it’s the bottom line that counts.
San Diego is looking forward to getting back to the fresh pacific coast air as they finish off a seven game road trip. Lee will be sharp today and the Padres may mail this one in. Get out the brooms as the Phillies make it a four game sweep!
