Breaking News – Avalanche vs Blues Postponed: NHL.com has confirmed that the February 1, 2011, NHL match-up between the Colorado Avalanche and the St. Louis Blues has been postponed indefinitely due to severe weather conditions.
CBS weather in St. Louis is forecasting up to 20 inches of snow for the area. In a written statement Vice Chairman and CEO of St. Louis Blues Enterprises Mike McCarthy stated “Due to the concerns and safety of our fans, players and staff, in conjunction with the NHL and the city of St. Louis, we have postponed tonight’s game”.
Postponed NHL Games Are A Rarity
This is just the sixth time since 2005 that there has been a postponed game in the National Hockey League. On October 22 and 29, 2005, back to back Florida Panther games against the Ottawa Senators and the Washington Capitals were canceled due to Hurricane Wilma.
On November 21, 2005 the game between the Nashville Predators and Detroit Red Wings was cancelled after the game had already started due to the collapse of Jiří Fischer on the Red Wings bench. Fisher went into cardiac arrest and, after being unconscious for six minutes, was resuscitated by an automated external defibrillator and through the use of CPR. Fisher would eventually recover but never played again and is now the Red Wings’ director of player development.
The other two NHL games cancelled since 2005 were the Colorado Avalanche and Calgary Flames in Denver on December 21, 2006, due to severe weather and the Tampa Bay Lightning and New Jersey Devils match-up on January 8, 2010 due to stadium lighting failure.
No make-up date has been set for the St. Louis Blues versus Colorado Avalanche match-up as this is being published.
