Barns are bursting with anticipation and the excitement level continues to mount as the 138th running of the Preakness Stakes is now less than two days away. There’s a lot to like about this bay colt (Sire: Malibu Moon) as he’s won five straight races – including his 17th to 1st journey during the Run for the Roses on a sloppy track at Churchill Downs two weeks ago. Kentucky Derby runners set to challenge Orb in the 138th Preakness Stakes
In what is a very small Preakness field, with just nine horses entered, Orb will be challenged by a few of his fellow Derby running-mates. Mylute (+700) who finished 5th in the Kentucky Derby and is piloted by Rosie Napravnik, and Goldencents (+750) who finished 17th in the Derby and is trained by Doug ONeill, who is looking for back-to-back Preakness wins (I’ll Have Another) are among the second favorites on Saturday. Itsmyluckyday, along with Will Take Charge and Oxbow who are both trained by D. Wayne Lucas, are all posted with a +1200 money line.
New Shooters will attempt to replicate winning runs by Bernardini and filly Rachel Alexandra
Three horses, that didn’t compete in the Run for the Roses, will attempt to follow the historical feats of Bernardini and Rachel Alexander as they join the Preakness field after skipping the Kentucky Derby. Out of the three, Departing, who last ran and won in the Gr. 3 Illinois Derby at Hawthorne in April, owns the top odds for new shooters with a +650 line. Legendary trainer Bob Baffert brings Governor Charlie (+1500) to Pimilco while Titletown Five completes the trio of Lucas trained entries and, with a +3000 betting line, is the longshot in the Preakness field.
