Synopsis
A young priest, Father Chisholm is sent to China to establish a Catholic parish among the non-Christian Chinese. While his boyhood friend, also a priest, flourishes in his calling as a priest in a more Christian area of the world, Father Chisholm struggles. He encounters hostility, isolation, disease, poverty and a variety of set backs which humble him, but make him more determined than ever to succeed.
Cinémathèque française John M. Stahl États-Unis / 1944 D'après le roman The Keys of the Kingdom d'A. J. Cronin. Avec Gregory Peck, Thomas Mitchell, Vincent Price. Sur un scénario de Joseph L. Mankiewicz, le parcours mouvementé d'un missionnaire peu conventionnel, de son Écosse natale à la Chine, où il affrontera la révolution, la peste et la misère. Premier rôle majeur pour Gregory Peck dans un tableau tout en nuances de la foi et de la tolérance religieuse. Comme toujours je suis mitigé avec John Stahl. Plein de bons détails dans un récit exagéré.
